BS Reporter Chennai/ Bangalore
Karnataka has announced an insurance cover for sheep reared by farmers living below the poverty line (BPL). The state government has set aside Rs 4.90 crore for the purpose.

Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik Belamaggi told reporters here on Wednesday that 9 lakh sheep will be covered under the insurance scheme.

"A farmer, hailing from the BPL category, can insure up to a maximum of 10 sheep. The identification of the beneficiaries for this scheme is on," he added.

The government planned to extend life insurance to the sheep rearing farmers for which it has sought the Centre's assistance. "We have urged the Centre to examine our proposal to extend financial assistance," Belamaggi said.
