Former deputy director general of Telecom department Runu Ghosh was today sentenced to three years rigourous imprisonment by a court here for amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 20.94 lakhs.

Special CBI Judge V K Maheshwari ordered confiscation of the illegal wealth amassed by Ghosh as a public servant when she was working under the then Telecom minister Sukhram and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on the 57-year-old former Indian Audit and Account Services officer.

The court, however, suspended her sentence for a period of two months to file an appeal in the case before the Delhi High Court.
It granted her bail on furnishing a personal and a surety bond of Rs 50,000 each.

The said illegal wealth was acquired during a period from November 1, 1992 to August 16, 1996 when Ghosh served as an deputy director general of Telecom department.

The Court had earlier on May 12 pronounced Ghosh, 57, guilty of possessing the disproportionate assets under the various provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.
