Sambalpur municipality to get corporation status

The other three municipal corporations are Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Cuttack

The state government today decided to upgrade Sambalpur municipality into a municipal corporation, taking to the total number of municipal corporations in the state to four. The other three municipal corporations are Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Cuttack.

The decision to upgrade the status of Sambalpur municipality was taken at a high level meeting chaired by chief minister, Naveen Patnaik here today. "The state government has given in-principle approval and the chief minister has directed to take requisite steps in this regard", said Prasanna Acharya, state finance minister.

The limits of the corporation will include areas under Burla and Hirakud NACs (notified area councils) and 12 gram panchayats located in the vicinity of Sambalpur city.
 

This will increase the total population of the proposed civic body to 3,35,761 as per 2011 census against the requirement of minimum three lakh population to get the corporation tag.The state government's move to give corporation status to the western Odisha city comes barely few days before the holding of urban local body election in the region.

Among others, chief secretary, Jugal Kishore Mohapatra, development commissioner Injeti Srinivas and law secretary Satrughana Pujahari were present at the meeting.
