The deferment of Ayodhya verdict after the Supreme Court order has sky-rocketed the price of vegetables in Chhattisgarh due to huge gap between demand and supply. Fearing bandh and unrest after the verdict that was supposed to be delivered on Friday, traders had not placed order for the vegetables that they were transporting from neighbouring states.
The news of deferment of the Ayodhya verdict reached late in the market yesterday while most traders had placed their order for just 25 per cent of the stock that they were purchasing daily, Sriniwas Reddy, President of Shastri Bazaar vegetable traders association, said.
People thronged the market on Thursday and to stock vegetables. The available stock nearly exhausted by late evening and they were forced to hike the price yesterday itself.
The price of vegetables here went up by nearly two times on Friday. The retail vegetable vendors sold vegetables at much higher prices.
According to the traders, the situation is likely to continue for the next couple of days till vegetables start coming from other states. As of now, they are trying to bridge the gap by transporting vegetables from nearby villages.
The yield of vegetables in the state is not sufficient to cater the demand and traders are forced to transport the same from the neighbouring states.
Traders said that heavy deployment of security personnel in the market had created panic.
