SCR gross earnings up 11.5%

South Central Railway (SCR) has achieved gross earnings of Rs 8,194 crore with an additional incremental earnings of Rs 846.30 crore for the financial year ending March 2012, as against Rs 7,348 crore last year, posting a growth rate of 11.5 per cent.
In a press release on Tuesday, SCR said it had crossed the milestone of 100 million tonne of originating freight loading, and loaded 103 million tonne of freight in the 2011-12 financial year, as compared with 96.2 million tonne in the previous year, registering a growth of 7 per cent.
Earnings from freight stood at Rs 5,815 crore, representing 71 per cent of the total earnings. The freight loading was mainly aided by coal from Singareni Collieries and the traffic offered at Krishnapatnam and Kakinada ports.
While coal constituted 52 per cent (53.32 million tonne) of the total loading, cement (24.7 million tonne), foodgrains (7.38 million tonne) and fertilisers (6.60 tonne) accounted for 2.8 per cent, 17.3 per cent and 8 per cent respectively.
On the passengers front, SCR carried 384 million originating passengers during 2011-12 (around 1 million passengers on an average per day). The number of originating passengers has shown an increase of 7.5 per cent, over last year’s 357 million passengers.
Passenger earnings constituted 25 per cent (Rs 2,020.56 crore) of the total earnings, as against Rs 1,863.90 crore last year, reflecting a growth of 8.4 per cent, the release added.
