State gets Rs 800 cr more under PMGSY

In appreciation of its good performance in developing rural roads under the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana the Centre has allocated an additional amount of Rs 810 crore to the state, taking the total grants to Rs 1,410 crore.
“As the state emerged as a number one state in implementing the PMGSY, the Centre sanctioned Rs 810 crore more for the year 2008-09,” Karnataka minister for rural development and panchayat raj Shobha Karandlaje told reporters here.
The government has identified 429 works under which it would develop 2700 kms of rural roads utilising the additional grants, she said.
The government has already developed 2,070 kms of road at a cost of Rs 600 crore, she said.
Karnataka has completed 9,000 kms of road work under the scheme out of the 13,000 kms approved, Shobha said adding she would soon send a proposal to the Centre to enhance the annual allocation under PMGSY to Rs 1,000 crore in 2009-10 from Rs 600 crore.
