State Bank of Travancore (SBT) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), becoming the first bank in Kerala to be a registrar for the Aadhaar project.
The agreement was signed by Santanu Mukherjee, general manager (Planning & Development), SBT, and Ashok Dalwai, deputy director general (UIDAI) in the presence of P Pradeep Kumar, managing director of the bank.
With its extensive reach in the state, SBT hopes to bring a large number of customers and non-customers for the registration for Aadhaar number. It is also aiming to include a large percentage of this group in its books at the time of registration for UID.
The bank has over Rs 11.1 lakh no-frills accounts and has financed 82,000 selfhelp groups in Kerala. It plans to cover all allotted unbanked villages in Kerala under its financial inclusion plan before March 2011.
