On Sunday, April 23, French citizens will go to the polls in the first round of the country’s 2017 presidential elections. The second round, between the top two candidates, takes place two weeks later, on May 7.

At present it’s nearly impossible to predict the final outcome – there are simply too many factors that could tip things in one direction or another, including the first-round results, the abstention rate, scandals dogging once-favoured François Fillon, the performance of centrist newcomer Emmanuel Macron, and the wide range of anti-establishment candidates.
