Gems, Jewellery Exports Up 30% In First Quarter

Exports of gems and jewellery for the first quarter (April to June 2002) was up 29.88 per cent to $1.74 billion from $1.34 billion for the same period last year.

For the current year, the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is expecting total exports to be up 10 per cent by the year end.

Speaking at the press conference, GJEPC president Sanjay Kothari said the industry had faced a slump in the demand after the September 11 incident in the US but now the demand has picked up since March 2002.

The exports of cut and polished diamonds grew 31.64 per cent in this period at $1,516.18 million against $1,151.78 million in April-June 2001, while jewellery exports showed a 21.08 per cent jump at $138.06 million for the quarter against $114.02 million in same period last year.

 

Exports of coloured gemstones also saw an increase of 12 per cent to $38.24 million in the first quarter 2002 against $34.16 million for the same period last year.
