Hope Theories

The economic numbers out of America seem positive; unemployment at 29-month lows, high productivity growth in July-September 2002, decent GDP growth. The US stock markets have responded with 20 per cent plus gains since late October.

But one quarter does not make for a confirmed recovery. The January-March 2002 quarter saw similarly healthy US numbers and that soon fizzled out.
