Background

Reckitt & Colman of India (RCIL) was incorporated in 1951 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of UK-based Reckitt & Colman Plc. In 1969, it took over the manufacturing operations of erstwhile Atlantis (East) Ltd. Atlantis had commenced its Indian operations in 1934 to trade in household, pharmaceutical, foods and toiletry products. In 1969, Atlantis was amalgamated with RCIL.

The company manufactures household and over-the-counter pharmaceutical products. The household range comprises fabric care, surface cleaners, pest control, air fresheners & lavatory care products. Its pharmaceutical products include antiseptic creams, ointments and analgesics.

RCIL owns about 20 brands, including Robin Blue, Dettol, Dispirin, Coldarin, Cherry Blossom, Lizol, Harpic and Mortein. In 1994, it acquired the Teepol from NOCIL, followed by Burnol in 1997-98 and Colin in November 1998.

Categories such as pest control, toilet soaps, surface care and fabric care account for 74 per cent of total revenues.
