Cher has turned down an offer to perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, over the country's anti-gay legislation.

The 'Believe' hitmaker, who was asked by a pal to become an ambassador for the sporting event and open the show, has denied the offer, Contactmusic reported.

The 67-year-old singer told MAClean's magazine that she wants to know why all of this gay hate just exploded in Russia.

Russian lawmakers recently banned the "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations", which sparked international backlash and protests from human rights campaigners.
