Shortly after the International Criminal Court in The Hague called on South Africa to arrest Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir, who arrived in Johannesburg for a summit of the African Union, a court has issued an interim order preventing the leader from leaving the country.

The court directed Bashir to stay until the court heard an application on whether he should be handed over to the International Criminal Court, reported the BBC.

The Sudanese president faces war crimes and genocide charges over the Darfur conflict, but has denied the allegations.

The warrants against Bashir have restricted his travel overseas.
