Former governor of New York Mario Cuomo died of a heart condition at the age of 82 on Thursday.

Cuomo passed away shortly after his eldest son was sworn in to a second term in the office that he held once, reported Fox News.

Cuomo was hospitalized in November after his son had won reelection. The late governor joined his son at a victory event, but was rushed to the hospital the next day.

He held the highest office in New York between 1983 and 1994. He also served as the lieutenant governor of New York from 1979 to 1982.

Coumo, after being defeated for a fourth term, retired from politics and worked at Manhattan law firm Willkie, Farr and Gallagher.
