At least nine new born babies have died at the Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital in Burla in Odisha's Sambalpur District.

The babies were aged between one and seven days and were under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Neonatal Care Centre of the VSS Medical College and Hospital, the largest one in Western Odisha.

All of them died within a span of 24 hours beginning Friday.

Hospital sources cited underweight, anemia and brain haemorhage as the possible causes of death.

The state government has ordered a departmental enquiry into the tragic incident. The inquiry commission will be headed by the Director, Medical Education and Training.
