The Pakistan Supreme Court has reportedly directed the federal government to ensure that the draft of the proposed Hindu Marriage Registration Bill is presented before the cabinet for final approval in two weeks.
The order was issued after Dr. Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Hindu Council, drew the attention of a three-judge Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk, towards the issue, reported the Dawn.
The court had taken up a case pertaining to the implementation of a set of guidelines handed in a June 19 judgment on minority rights.
The issue relating to the absence of a Hindu marriage registration law has been brought to the Supreme Court's notice more than once.
A bench headed by then Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry had taken up a similar issue in 2012 over a newspaper column that highlighted the problems faced by Hindus living in Pakistan in obtaining Computerised National Identity Cards and passports.
It is difficult for Hindu couples living in the country to get their marriages registered as per Hindu customs due to the absence of the law.
