PM Modi pays tribute to victims at Toronto's Air India memorial

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to victims of an airplane bombing in a wreath-laying ceremony at Kanishka Air India Memorial site in Toronto.

The memorial honours the 329 people who died when Air India Flight 182 went down off the coast of Ireland on June 23, 1985 after departing from Toronto.

Following the ceremony, the Prime Minister would be leaving for Vancouver, where he is scheduled to visit the Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan and Laxmi Narayan Temple.

Prime Minister Modi held a round table conference with heads of pension funds, banks and other financial leaders of Canada, earlier today.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi attended a reception hosted by his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper and addressed the diaspora event at the Ricoh Coliseum.

 

The Prime Minister also met Canadian Governor General David Johnston, before holding a tete-a-tete with his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.

He also attended a ceremonial reception before being accorded a guard of honour.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Ottawa on Tuesday, for the third and final leg of his three-nation, nine-day tour.

Canada Defence Minister Jason Kenney, Minister of International Trade Ed Fast, Indian Ambassador to Canada Vishnu Prakash, Canada Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Deepak Obhrai and Canadian MPs Patrick Brown, Royal Galipeau and Devinder Shory were present at the airport to welcome him.

Chief of Protocol of Canada, Angela Bogdan, and Canadian High Commissioner to India Nadir Patel were also present.

Prime Minister Modi's trip to Canada is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 42 years.

Prime Minister Modi arrived here after concluding a successful visit to France and Germany.
