Local police have conducted martial arts training for about 400 school girls in West Bengal's Siliguri district in order to combat violence against women.

Recently, the alleged rapes of girl children triggered protests, reawakening concerns about safety for women and girls.

In order to protect themselves, the girls were seen enthusiastic and curious to learn defence training.

Deputy Commissioner of Police of Siliguri, OG Paul on Saturday said that this is a small initiative to build a confidence in girls and to train them to protect themselves in case of contingency.

"As the girls are becoming advanced , they want to go out ;and nowadays the government has made strict laws about the safety of women. Similarly the police also do their work. Law and police comes later, the main aim is to protect yourself," said Paul.

Girls appreciated the step taken by the city police. "As we regularly face problems, this training program will help us fight the people who chase us. We enjoyed self-defence training," said Ellen Sindha, a participant.

The training programme will not only ensure their security but at the same time will boost their confidence.

One in three rape victims in India are children, according to UNICEF.
