Sharad Joshi demise a big setback for the agriculture sector: Gadkari

Expressing grief over the demise of farmers' leader Sharad Joshi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said it is a big setback for the agriculture sector of the country.

"The demise of Sharad Joshi is a very big setback for the agriculture sector of the country. Personally, it is a big loss for us, I am a staunch supporter of him, I keep drawing inspirations from his life. His struggle for the farmers of this country can't be forgotten," Gadkari told ANI here.

Gadkari further condoled the demise of Sharad Joshi, saying he was friend, philosopher and guide to him.

"This nation needs the agricultural policy about which Joshi ji always talked about. Sharad Joshi was a friend, philosopher and guide to me. I deeply regret the sad demise of a leader who always stood for the rights of the farmers even on the international level. I pay my homage to him, may his sould rest in peace," he added.

Eminent farmers' leader and founder of 'Shetkari Sanghatana' Sharad Joshi died in Pune today. He was 81.

Joshi floated Shetkari Sanghatana in 1979 to fight for farmers' cause and hogged limelight with an agitation of onion growers in 1980 to demand remunerative prices for the produce. He was also member of Rajya Sabha from 2004-2010.
