Somalia's government has announced that it is offering amnesty to the al Qaeda linked militant group al Shabaab whose leader was targeted in a United States airstrike on Monday.

The government has given the militants a 45 day period to take up the offer, said Security Minister Khalif Ahmed Ereg.

The minister ensured that a better livelihood would be given to those who met the deadline, reported News24.

Al Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane was reportedly targeted by U.S. airstrikes on Monday while Somali and American officials are still examining the attack results.

Somali forces launched an operation against al Shabaab last week with assistance of African Union troops.
