Earlier, Australia declared their innings at 369/6 to set up a humongous chase for England.
George Bailey equaled Brian Lara's record of most runs in a Test over as he struck 28 off an over of James Anderson.
For the visitors, Michael Carberry made 31; Kevin Pietersen made 45 while Ian Bell made a quick 60 run-knock before falling to Peter Siddle.
Ben Stokes (72 not out) and Matt Prior (5 not out) are currently occupying the crease.
