A Cambodian court on Thursday sentenced Australian Tammy Davis-Charles to one-and-a-half-years in prison for running a surrogacy clinic in the country which has banned the process.

Judge Sor Linna also imposed a fine of 4 million riel ($978) on the 49-year-old Davis-Charles for falsifying documents and acting as an intermediary between pregnant women and the adoptive parents, reports Efe news.

Cambodian nationals Samrith Chakrya, 35, and Pech Rithy, 28, who were working at the clinic, were also sentenced to 18 months imprisonment and fined 2 million riel each.

Davis-Charles, Chakrya and Rithy were arrested in November 2016, weeks after the Cambodian government declared surrogacy illegal.
