Czech PM steps down after losing confidence vote

IANS Prague

The Czech Republic's Prime Minister Jiri Rusnok Tuesday submitted his cabinet's resignation to President Milos Zeman after his failure last Wednesday to win the vote of confidence in parliament.

The cabinet of technocrats was formed by President Zeman last month.

The president accepted their resignations and asked the current cabinet to continue working until a new government was appointed, Xinhua reported.

"Let me thank you very much for the work your cabinet has done so far and ask you and your cabinet to exercise your posts until the establishment of a new cabinet, which, I hope, will emerge from free elections," the president said.

The government's resignation paves the way for an early election, likely to be held by October, BBC reported.
