IANS New Delhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday retained Gujarat for the sixth consecutive time, but with a final tally of 99, it fell way short of its much touted "Mission 150" set by party chief Amit Shah.

The saffron party, however, wrested Himachal Pradesh from the Congress with a thumping majority, winning 44 of the 68 seats. The Congress lagged way behind with just 21 seats.

In Gujarat, the home state of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, the Congress gained much ground with 77 seats. Its ally, the Bharatiya Tribal Party, won two seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) got one while three Independents sailed through.

In Himachal, the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) won a seat after 20 years. Two seats went to Independent candidates.
