Confined to a wheelchair after an accident, a 26-year old Nigerian woman had little hope of walking again, due to her excessive weight of 154 kg. That was till she decided to undergo bariatric surgery at a hospital here.

An unfortunate accident a couple of years back had left the woman with an amputated leg, said a release from the Moolchand hospital.

Hoping to walk again with the help of a prosthesis, the woman underwent 10 surgeries on her leg. However, all attempts failed because of her excessive weight.

After all evaluations and discussions with orthopaedic and rehabilitation teams, gastro-laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon at Moolchand hospital Ashish Bhanot concluded that the only ray of hope to get her walking again was bariatric or weight loss surgery.

Doctors at the hospital took the challenge of giving a new lease of life to the young woman.

Surgery was successfully performed on her two weeks back, wherein her stomach was re-sized to reduce the food holding capacity.

The recovery phase has been good. Her facial features masked by fat are visible again, and the contours of her neck, which she never saw for many years now could be seen clearly.

The woman has already lost 20 kg within two weeks and is expected to lose approximately 80 kg from her present weight, the release said.
