Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's visit is "important" for Bangladesh as it will hopefully open a "new horizon" in bilateral ties, a leading Bengali daily said Thursday.

"The visit of a policy-making level member of India's new government is important. We welcome her... Hope this visit will open a 'new horizon' in bilateral ties," the Bhorer Kagoj said in an editorial.

Noting that there was no alternative to good relations, the paper said the three-day visit that began Wednesday would help resolve all contentious issues between the two countries.

It said the new BJP-led government in India was keen to give a new dimension to relations with Bangladesh.

The paper said Sushma Swaraj's visit, within a month of change of government in New Delhi, reflected India's "positive mentality" towards Dhaka.

In an obvious reference to the BJP's majority in the Lok Sabha, the paper earlier said a "strong" government in India had made Bangladesh hopeful that New Delhi would take initiatives to resolve all contentious issues.
