At least 16 persons are believed to have died in different parts of Tamil Nadu since Saturday unable to bear the four-year jail term awarded to AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa by a court in the disproportionate wealth case.

65-year old AIADMK worker S Venkatesan died in a hospital here after he set himself ablaze by pouring kerosene, three others hanged themselves while another jumped before a speeding bus elsewhere, police said today.

Ten persons are believed to have suffered cardiac arrest, apparently unable to come to terms with the verdict, while one person died of shock, they said.

Those who allegedly committed suicide also included two Class 12 students who set themselves ablaze in Tiruppur.
