In a crackdown on cattle smugglers in Haryana, 18 cows were rescued in Bhiwani district in the wee hours today.
The truck ferrying the cattle was asked to stop for checking during patrolling on Dadri road in Bhiwani. However, instead of halting, the driver sped the vehicle towards Dadri, Secretary of Regional Transport Authority and City Magistrate, Mahesh Kumar said.
On being chased, the truck was left abandoned at Ramnagar village with 19 cows. The three occupants of the truck fled from the scene.

However, as the animals were crammed in the vehicle beyond capacity, one of them died due to suffocation. The other cows have been shifted to a 'gaushala' (cow shed), Kumar said, adding a case was registered.
