2 fires in Kolkata, outskirts

Press Trust of India Kolkata

Kolkata Police sources said 10 fire tenders fought for two hours to put-off a blaze at a paper godown in the Ultadanga area which was suspected to have been ignited by a 'rocket' firework.

The residents of an adjacent slum had to be evacuated to safer place as the flames threatened to spread to adjoining areas.

West Bengal minister for Disaster Management Javed Khan visited the site to monitor the fire fighting operation.

In the second blaze, seven fire tenders rushed to Baranagar Jute Mills, on northern outskirts, to extinguish flames first spotted around 10 pm, police sources said.

The extent of damage in the jute mill fire was not known.
