An accident between a truck and a motorcycle on an Express Highway has claimed the lives of two persons in Jajpur district, police said today.

Two pedestrians also sustained serious injuries in the accident that took place last evening, the police said.

The accident occurred when a truck hit a two-wheeler near Srirampur on Paradeep-Daitary Express Highway, killing the motorcyclist and the pillion rider.

The victims have been identified as Dillip Mallik (50) and his nephew Saisankar Mallik (14) of Nuagaon village in Jajpur district, they said.

The injured were identified as Kumudini Mallik (36) and her 10 year-old-son Pupun. They were admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

After the news of the accident spread, locals put up a road blockade on the Express Highway at Srirampur demanding adequate compensation to the kin of the victims and the injured. The protestors also demanded action against the truck driver.

The blockade was withdrawn after officials reached the spot and assured them of legal action against unauthorised overloaded vehicles.
