Five children drowned today after the jeep they were travelling in plunged into a pond near a temple in Bihar's Buxar district, police said.
The mishap took place when the vehicle carring eleven kanwarias from a village in Bhojpur district on a pilgrimage to Parmeshwarnath temple lost control and fell into a pond, Deputy Superintendent of Police R K Gupta said.
While six occupants jumped out to safety, five children comprising three boys and two girls who were seated in the rear side of the vehicle drowned, he said.

The bodies of all the children have been fished out and sent for post-mortem, Gupta said.
Efforts were on to ascertain the identity of the victims, he said.
