Ruling Congress MLAs Mahipal Maderna and Malkhan Singh, under judicial custody for their alleged role in the Bhanwari Devi case, did not vote in the election in which UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee and BJP-backed P A Sangma are in the fray.

Chief whip of the government, Raghu Sharma, has expressed confidence of getting 116 votes in favour of Mukherjee.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Deependra Singh Shekhawat, was the first to exercise his franchise.

He was followed by Parliamentary Secretary Mamta Bhupesh and Bina Kak whereas BJP whip Rajendra Rathore was the last candidate to cast his vote, according to an Assembly official.

Elaborate security arrangements were in place for the polling in the Assembly building here, the official said, adding the ballot boxes will be sent to Delhi.

In the house of 200, Congress has a strength of 102 including two jailed MLAs and has support of 10 independent MLAs while BJP has 79 MLAs.
