A section of JNU teachers today termed as baseless the allegations of an assistant professor that his car was vandalised for organising an event to condole the death of jawans in Sukma and Kupwara, claiming that other teachers had also experienced such "random" acts of vandalism.

In a release issued here, the teachers said it was for the first time that such hasty conclusions were drawn and instead of probing the incident, it has been recast as some kind of political conspiracy and vendetta.

They also expressed "shock" over how Buddha Singh's tweet went viral raising speculations and allegations.

"Members of JNU faculty are shocked at the kinds of allegations and speculations being made because a faculty member's car that was vandalised a couple of nights ago," Jayati Ghosh, a faculty of the varsity, said in the release.

"Obviously it is a cause for concern, but this is not an isolated incident. In past months other faculty members living on campus have had similar experiences of such random acts of vandalism," she said.

However, no teachers have so far neither made such baseless allegations nor blamed students' groups or levelled charges against any particular political ideology, the release said.

Since early 2016, such incidents were cropping up and it was a cause of concern. It was the duty of teachers to maintain calm during examinations and at a time when some students are in crisis, the teachers said.

Singh on April 29 had alleged that his car was vandalised in retaliation for organising an event on the varsity campus to condole the death of jawans in Sukma and Kupwara.

"My car vandalized and stone-pelted at home at midnight as a reward for organizing condolence meet at JNU and mass gathered for Sukma and Kupwara Martyrs (sic)," he had tweeted along with pictures of his damaged car.
