The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) and Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) combine today voted the chairman of Aizawl Municipal Council C T Zakhuma of the ruling Congress out of power.
Zakhuma was removed from the chairman's post by 10-8 votes as one of the councillors Lalthanliana, who was elected as a legislator in the Assembly elections held on November 25, 2013, did not participate in the voting.
Besides its own five councillors, the Congress got the support of two rebel ZNP and one MPC councillors.

In the first election to the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Council (AMC) held on November 3, 2010, the Congress-ZNP alliance bagged ten seats (five wards each) while the opposition MNF-MPC alliance secured nine wards (MNF five and MPC four).
After the MNF, MPC and the ZNP unitedly fought the election to the lone Lok Sabha seat on May 9 this year, the Opposition combine was making moves to overthrow the AMC executive council claiming that the ZNP, now being in the Opposition, the Congress was in the minority.
The plan was sped up after two ZNP councillors and one MPC councillor rebelled and claimed to have split their respective parties.
