Assam cop fires at crane driver, helper, arrested

Assam police officer Golap Konwar was arrested and suspended today on charge of shooting and injuring two persons last night in Guwahati, a police officer said.

Konwar posted in Basistha Police Station as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was travelling in his vehicle after duty when he allegedly fired at the driver and 'handyman' (helper) of a hydraulic crane at Borbari area of the city, the officer said.

Quoting eye witness accounts, the officer said when Konwar could not move ahead on the road due to the crane, one round of bullet was filed from inside the car injuring its driver and handyman.
 

After investigation police this morning arrested the ASI and on searching his home recovered his service revolver, and several rounds of bullets, they said.

The seized weapon and ammunition have been sent for forensic tests and Konwar was being interrogated, the sources said.

Meanwhile, government has placed the arrested ASI under immediate suspension.

The crane's injured driver and handyman identified as Rakesh Kumar and Rukesh Thakur respectively have been admitted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Konwar after his arrest told reporters that he had fired "in self defence as about seven people had attacked me".
