A roadside bomb exploded in Egypt's coastal city of Alexandria today, killing one policeman and injuring four others, two days before the presidential elections.

The bomb, targeting security chief convoy in Rushdy district, was planted under a car and went off when the convoy passed by it, according to a statement by the ministry of interior.

The blast, widely heard by Rushdy residents, damaged buildings and shops in the surrounding areas.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion.

The attack comes days before the country is set to hold the 2018 presidential elections, which will take place from Monday to Wednesday.

According to Al-Ahram newspaper, authorities have been stepping up security nationwide ahead of the elections, where President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is facing the head of the Ghad Party Moussa Moustafa Moussa.
