A man was shot dead today when he protested the attempts of four youths to rape his two sisters at Dainhat in Burdwan district, police said.
Ganesh Murmu (22) was shot from close range early this morning when he stopped the youths from raping his two sisters at their home at Nasipur Adivasi Para in Dainhat.
"The gunmen fled after firing the shots. Murmu, who works as a private security guard, died on the spot. The police have launched a manhunt to arrest the culprits," Superintendent of Police S M H Mirza said.
The police said that the youths broke into their home and tried to rape Murmu's sisters. They shot Murmu when he raised an alarm as they tried to abduct and rape his sisters.
The body was sent to Katwa Sub-division Hospital for postmortem, police added.
