Committee to submit report on Vidhan Parishad soon

The special committee set up by Odisha government to study the functioning of Vidhan Parishad in other states will soon submit its report, a member of the committee said today.

To committee will submit the report suggesting modalities for setting up of the Legislative Council in the state, the member said.

The panel led by Commerce and Transport Minister Nrushingha Charan Sahu recently visited Bihar and Telangana.

"The committee during its visit studied the resolution passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly for setting up of the Vidhan Parishad. In Telangana, Council was formed after the Assembly passed the resolution. A similar resolution might be tabled in the Odisha legislative Assembly," Sahu said.

 

The state government had formed a six-member special committee to visit Bihar and Telangana. Manohar Randhari (BJD), Pramila Mallik (BJD), Bhujabal Majhi (Congress), Nitish Gangadeb (BJP) were other members.

However, Majhi and Gangadeb had expressed their unwillingness to visit Telengana and Bihar.

The committee had earlier visited Maharashtra and Karnataka in 2015 to learn about the formation and functioning of the Legislative Council has submitted its report to the state government. The first meeting of the committee on Vidhan Parishad was convened on January 19, 2015.

Odisha has a Legislative Assembly only at present.
