In a setback to Congress in Telangana, its MLA from Yellendu in Khammam district has decided to join the ruling TRS.

Speaking to reporters, K Kanakaiah said he would join the TRS on August 1, adding that his decision was taken in the interest of development of his region.

Congress had won 22 seats in the 119-member Legislative Assembly. A party MLA has already switched over to TRS.

With Kanakaiah announcing his decision to move over to the TRS, the strength of the national party in the Assembly would effectively come down to 20.

In a shot in the arm for TRS, senior TDP leader and former minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, who also hails from Khammam district, has also announced his decision to join the ruling party.
