The police said Trinamool Congress councillor of ward-2 of Midnapore Municipality Debi Chakraborty and his 18-month-old grandson Agniswar died on the spot at Labadoba village this evening when their car hit the roadside tree.
Chakraborty's daughter-in-law Paramita died after being taken to hospital and his son, who was driving the vehicle, were critically injured.
Paromita and her infant son were sitting in the front seat and Debi Chakraborty was sitting in the rear seat, the police said.
Chakraborty's son was critically injured and admitted to Midnapore Medical College hospital, the police said.
They were returning from Durgapur to their home in Midnapore town after attending a family programme.
