A large number of students from JNU, Delhi University and Jamia Millia today staged a demonstration outside Banga Bhawan here to protest the death of a student activist in Kolkata.

The protesters came to Banga Bhawan, owned by West Bengal government, and shouted slogans demanding immediate action against the policemen who were involved in the death of 22-year-old Sudipto Gupta, an SFI activist.

JNUSU President Lenin said all those involved in the incident should be punished.

Some students tried to scale the wall of the building but were stopped by police.

Suditpo, an MA student of Rabindra Bharati University, was arrested yesterday during a rally and law violation programme to demand holding of union elections.

He fell from a bus and his head hit a lamp post, when he and other arrested SFI members were being taken to the Presidency Jail.

While SFI and CPI(M) alleged that Gupta died of injuries sustained in a lathicharge by police, Joint Commissioner (Hqs) of Kolkata Police Jawed Shamim maintained that he died in an accident.
