Fire breaks out at Old Collectorate Building in Howrah

A fire broke out at the Old Collectorate Building in Howrah, leading to controlled movement of vehicles over Howrah bridge and traffic snarls in the heart of the metropolis.

The fire broke out at the record room of the Old Collectorate Building near the district magistrate bungalow in Howrah city at 10.50 am, fire brigade sources said.

According to them, the blaze was brought under control at 12.20 pm after a firefight of nearly one and half hour, using eight fire tenders.

With vehicular movement to Howrah from the metropolis and vice versa having been controlled owing to the blaze, major traffic snarls occurred on arterial roads leading to Howrah bridge.
 

Traffic movement on the bridge over River Hooghly was controlled and diverted to the second Hooghly bridge, Kolkata Police sources said.

People going to Howrah station to board long distance trains were inconvenienced alongwith thousand others going for work at Burrabazar area, the trading and business hub of the city.
