Press Trust of India New Delhi

The occasion is the 8th International Flora Expo 2013, a three-day exhibition of flora and floral art.

Design experts associated with various floral arranger groups from US, Singapore, Oman, Pakistan and India as well are participating in the show that began on January 11.

All the goups are members of the England-based World Association of Flower Arrangers (WAFA), a body which awards international recognition.

"Indian art of flower arrangement has moved ahead now and pushed India on the world map of flowers. We are now associated with WAFA through which we can compete globally and can also learn other western floral arts in such expos," says Shalini Newar, a member of Kolkata-based Pushpa Bitan Society.

The society comprising 400 woman flower arrangers, is the only body which represents India at WAFA.

At the expo in Delhi, the society spread out arrangements based on different themes. Using a variety of stems, leaves, fruits and flowers, they have created flora art based on themes like sunshine, water, party and even sufi themes.

Shahimah Sayeed, a member of flower arrangers society in Pakistan, says participating in the exhibition is an exploration.

"My art represents peace between India and Pakistan. I have used white and green which symbolises peace and greenery. But I really like the floral art here. Flowers here are of very high standard. I have sourced all my flowers used in the art from Delhi as I want explore my art with local materials," she says.

Hong Kong flower club member Christianne Duckworth from Singapore who is an expert in western art of flower arrangements and has also learnt the Japanese Ikeabana, has exhibited intricate floral displays based on a "party" theme.

"This is my second visit to India. I can see a lot of change now, Indian floral art has grown a lot. And these ladies are very talented. I look forward to the Flower Olympic which is going to take place in India in 2020," says Christianne. MORE
