Maharashtra government has cancelled the recognition of Sri Sadguru Seva Mandir Bal Griha of Yeoor in the district, years after the authorities had found lack of facilities in the school, an official said today.

Commissioner of Women and Child Welfare Department of the state government has cancelled the recognition accorded to the ashram school, Thane district child welfare officer Shashikant Chavan told PTI here.

In 2008, one of the inmates of the ashram school (a residential school for tribal children) had died due to the alleged negligence of the management. During the investigation the government found a number of flaws in the school, including lack of facilities to the inmates as per the prescribed norms.

However the government could not not take any action due to a high court stay, which was recently lifted, following which the government swiftly cancelled the permission granted to the school.

"After the cancellation of recognition to the home, parents have been asked to take back their children and the government has also appealed to the citizens not to admit their wards in the school," Shashikant Chavan, the district child welfare officer told PTI.

At the time of revoking the permission there were around 35 tribal students in the ashram school and all have been sent home, he said.
