The state government had sent a proposal to the Centre seeking to give ST status to these tribes, who are worse in terms of socio-economic indicators.

"Till the Centre takes a final call on the proposal, the state will provide free hostel and scholarship facilities to these primitive tribes," a government official said.

These tribes comprise Bhuiya, Binjhiya, Pathari, Rautiya and Sabariya, and will get all certain education benefits which are being given to students belonging to scheduled tribes.

The Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste Development Department had issued a directive in this regard, the official said.

As per the directive, the state government has sent a proposal to Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs seeking to include these five primitive tribes in the schedule cast list of the state under the article 342 (II) of the constitution.

In case the Centre refuses to accept the proposal, the state will withdraw all the facilities at the end of the academic session. Besides, children of these primitive tribes will not be eligible for constitutional rights entitled to the scheduled tribes, the official said.
