A one-and-half-year old leopard cub died due to pneumonia in Gir forest in Gujarat's Amreli district, a senior official said Friday.

The carcass of the leopard cub was found by forest staff in Dalkhania range of Gir forest in Dhari taluka of Amreli district Thursday, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) A K Saxena told PTI.

"As per reports shared by local officials, the leopard cub died due to lung infection, that is pneumonia. The cause of death was revealed during the post mortem," said Saxena.

"Every infection is not a virus infection. Young cubs are normally susceptible to such lung infection. This is a common issue among young cubs," he added.

Incidentally, this is the same forest range where 23 lions died in September due to infighting, Canine Distemper Virus and Protozoa infection.

Saxena said that the leopard's death was not connected with the infection that killed the lions earlier.
