The Bombay High Court has upheld the life imprisonment awarded to a 34-year-old man who set his wife on fire when she refused to sell her gold mangalsutra to buy him liquor.
Dadasaheb Vyankatesh Gholve, a resident of Solapur, was convicted by the Sessions court for the murder of his wife Sangeeta in November 2003. He was also found guilty of subjecting her to cruelty under section 498 A of the Indian Penal Code.
Gholve filed an appeal in the High Court, but two days ago the court upheld his conviction and life sentence.

The High Court also upheld acquittal of his parents for lack of evidence.
"Upon examining the prosecution evidence, we find that the prosecution has proved the offence against the appellant beyond reasonable doubt," said the division bench of Justices Shalini Phansekar-Joshi and P V Hardas.
The HC relied on the evidence of Sangeeta's brother Dayanand who said she was treated in a cruel manner by Gholve who often beat her up for not giving him money for liquor.
