The Madras High Court today directed the City Police Commissioner to register a case on the complaint of a woman lecturer of Loyola College here alleging sexual harassment by some senior colleagues.
Justice C.T.Selvam, who gave the interim direction on a criminal original petition filed by the lecturer, asked her to lodge a fresh complaint with the Police Commissioner who, in turn after perusal, register a case if a cognizable offence is established.
According to the woman, she was appointed as a lecturer in Tamil Department of the College in 2007. She alleged in her petition that Rajarajan, who was promoted as the Head of Tamil Department the next year, started behaving in an indecent manner and another Assistant Professor Prince also joined him.
She said that at one point she decided to resign from the college but for the assurance given by the Principal that he would take action.
The committee against sexual harassment attached to the College in its report to the University submitted there was truth in her complaint.
In her petition, she alleged that in spite of repeated reminders she was not furnished with the copies of the report whereas they were supplied to persons involved in the harassment and no action was taken against them till date either by the University or by the College.
She submitted she was filing the petition as the offences attracted the provisions of Sexual Harassment Against Women at Work place (prevention, prohibition and redressal) Act 2013.
