ILS at Karipur airport to be functional soon: Airport Director

The new Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the Calicut international airport in Karipur, about 30 kms from here, would soon be functional as the mandatory air calibration tests were completed today, a top official said.

The air calibration tests needed prior to commissioning ofthe new ILS were conducted today, the Airport Director said in a release.

A team of officials from Flight Inspection and Radio Construction and Development Units of the Communication, Navigation and Surveilance (CNS) conducted the tests.

A special aircraft of the AAI flew over the runway to assess the system and make any corrections needed, airport sources said.
 

Based on their report, the DGCA will give its clearance for the new system, they added.

The new ILS has been installed at a cost of Rs Three crore replacing the old system installed in 1996, the release said.

The ILS provides precision lateral and vertical guidance to anaircraft approaching the runway using radio signals.

For an airport like Karipur, which has a table top runway, an advanced ILS is crucial, the release added.
