India placed 5th in latest FIDE rankings

India is placed fifth in both the open and women section, according to the recently-released World Chess Federation (FIDE) ranking.

India jumped to the fifth spot by average of the top 10 players.

India is now behind Russia, China, Ukraine, USA.

India now boasts of 36 Grand Masters, 80 International Masters and is the fastest growing chess nation since occupying the number one place in October 2013 in terms of number of players in the FIDE rating list, a statement from All India Chess Federation said.

In the biggest surprise to the chess world in 2014, India finished third and won the bronze medal in the Chess Olympiad held at Tromso, Norway earlier this August.
 

In the women's list also India is on fifth place behind China, Russia, Georgia and Ukraine.

In the latest rankings, there are 44190 Indian names. Behind India are Russia (39946), France (38362), Spain (33866), Germany (29044).
